Pack elders often told amazing stories. But lately they seemed more unbelievable than ever. Still, ever curious as pups are, there was always someone asking. A gathering of pups sat around an old wolf, who had perhaps seen better days, but still found ways to make himself useful, perhaps by keeping the pups entertained and out of trouble. And so, the storytelling began.
"There was a time when the world was filled with magic and wonder. When the balance of power was in harmony and undisturbed by man. That time is for the most part, long passed.
Ten great powers controlled the natural balance. Great wolves, ethereal and powerful. These Spirits each embodied an aspect of nature and ruled over their respective domains.
Firey and unpredictable, the Spirit of Fire ruled over the deserts and volcanoes. The silky Spirit of Water, over oceans, lakes, and rivers. These two, although only two of the ten ruling powers, are well known perhaps to everyone, even now. Opposing in nature, they are each other's weakness, yet when in harmony their power multiplies. Such a duality was evident in each of the powers; fire and water, earth and wind, sun and moon, summer and winter, smoke and mist....each strengthened when working as one, yet weak when opposing one another.
From these Wolf Spirits, spawned all wolf kin. Each generation inheriting a small semblance of their creator's power; a power that could be tapped into by those aware of it. For some time, the Spirits ruled their domains in plain sight, walking among their creations. They were revered, respected as what humans might call gods. But gradually, with time, their creations moved on, and all but forgot about them, and the once great Spirits disappeared into obscurity to be thought of as nothing more than a myth,or legend. Stories...."
the old wolf trailed off. Lost in thought.
